Why does the App Store show "9+"?
Apple's age rating system is based on the type of content an app contains, not the age of its intended audience. Because ARFID addresses a real health and wellness topic — Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder — Apple's questionnaire automatically assigns a 9+ rating.
This rating is a content classification, not a recommendation. ARFID has no inappropriate, scary, or mature content. The visuals, language, and gameplay are designed with young children in mind.
Who is ARFID for?
ARFID is built for children who struggle with picky eating or have been diagnosed with ARFID, working alongside a parent or caregiver. There is no minimum age — toddlers, preschoolers, and older children can all benefit when the app is used together with a grown-up.
The interface is designed to be inviting for young kids, but the app assumes that an adult is involved in:
- Setting up the food list and confirming attempts
- Choosing the rewards in the Bites Shop
- Supervising actual food experiences
Important: Parental Responsibility
ARFID is a tool to encourage exploration of new foods. It is not medical or therapeutic advice, and it does not know your child. Parents and caregivers are fully responsible for:
- Allergies and intolerances. Always verify that any food in your child's journey is safe for them. The app does not check ingredients, cross-contamination, or medical conditions.
- Choking hazards. Many foods are unsafe for younger children in their typical form (whole grapes, hot dogs, popcorn, hard candies, raw vegetables, nuts, etc.). Cut, cook, or modify foods appropriately for your child's age and developmental stage. The American Academy of Pediatrics provides helpful guidance on choking prevention.
- Dietary requirements. If your child has special dietary needs (medical, religious, cultural), curate the food list accordingly.
- Emotional safety. If your child has been diagnosed with ARFID or another feeding disorder, consult with their care team about whether and how to use the app. ARFID is not a substitute for professional feeding therapy.
Not a Medical Device
ARFID is an educational and motivational tool. It is not a medical device, and it does not diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. If you have concerns about your child's eating, please consult a pediatrician, registered dietitian, or feeding therapist.
